Teacher Biographies:

 

Krissy Lowrie has been teaching Kindergarten at HCA for 6 years. She received her teaching degree from Mary Baldwin University. She grew up in Charlottesville, Va. and has been living in Hanover County for 13 years. Mrs. Lowrie has 2 children.

 

Wendy Malamphy teaches first grade at HCA. She has her Master's Degree in Education from Marymount University. Before coming to HCA, she worked in the Hanover County Public Schools. Wendy has always enjoyed working with children whether in preschool, elementary,Sunday School, church choir or tutoring. Wendy and her husband, Tim, have 3 children- Daniel, Brian and Annie. Outside of her classroom, her favorite sport is cheering her kids on in their sports and playing tennis when she can. Wendy loves teaching at HCA and is thrilled to be able to teach in a Christian environment, celebrating Jesus' love.

 

Cherie Evans has been teaching for 11 years. She taught 2nd and 3rd graders in the public school system for 9 years and has taught at HCA for the last 2 years. She has been married for 11 years to TJ and has 2 boys- Joseph and Elijah. The boys both attended HCA and Cherie feels blessed to have been a part of HCA as both a parent and a teacher.

 

Karen Wimmer has been teaching at HCA for 6 years. The past 4 years she has taught 3rd grade. She has lived in Hanover County for 12 years and has a husband, Marc, and 3 children- Kaylin, Davis and William. Before moving to Hanover, Mrs. Wimmer taught for 11 years in Lynchburg and Roanoke. Her favorite hobby is carpooling kids to baseball, hockey, dance, archery and track. She loves watching the kids at HCA grow and succeed.

 

Amy Martin graduated from James Madison University in 1994 with a Bachehlor of Science Degree. She is a certified Special Education Teacher and worked in Hanover County for 5 years until starting her family. She has been an elementary teacher at HCA for 7 years. Currently she teaches 4th grade at HCA. When not teaching, she is busy being a wife and a mother to four children.

 

Cindy Turner received her B.S. in Elementary Education and an added endorsement in grades 4-8 from Longwood College. Mrs. Turner began her career in education in New Kent County where she taught 4th and 5th grades. For the past 6 years, Mrs. Turner has taught 5th grade at HCA. She has a husband and 4 girls. She loves music, cooking, watching movies and attending her children's activities. She is an active member of Derbyshire Baptist Church and serves on the Children's Ministry Team and the Youth Ministry Team.

 

Jennie Smith was the very first teacher at HCA, previously known as New Hanover Christian School, when it opened its doors in the fall of 2007. A graduate of VCU's School of Education, she taught in Hanover County for 15 years before leaving the SOL paperwork behind to teach at HCA. She currently teaches math and science to the 5th and 6th graders and enjoys sponsoring the middle school drama club- THe HCA Chapel Players. She and her husband, Alan, are the proud parents of 2 daughters- Shelby and Sydney.

 

Michelle Carr graduated form the State University of New York with a Bachelor of Science in HIstory. In 2010, she received her teacher license from the University of Richmond and is certified to teach secondary education in history and social science. Mrs. Carr is a member of the Church of the Redeemer and is on the Alter Server Ministry and the Redeemer Cares Ministry. She is also co-director of Vacation Bible School . Mrs. Carr and her husband and 4 children are all active in the church and community. Mrs. Carr encourages our students at HCA to be active in community service. They coordinate fundraising activities to support area missions.

 

Andrea Kent earned her BS in Mathematics and a minor in Statistics from Virginia Tech. She has been employed at HCA for 5 years and has taught pre-algebra and algebra 1. She is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and has served her church as a member of the vestry, Christian Education Director and Sunday School Teacher. She has a true passion for education and passing on knowledge both academic and spiritual.

 

Meg Sheriff holds a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Trinity University and dual degrees in English and Spanish from Radford University. Now owner of Smart Solutions Tutoring, she teaches writing to students in grades 3-8. She is thrilled to be back in the classroom at HCA teaching  language arts to 7th and 8th graders and Spanish to K-4th graders. She is mother to 3 boys and when not teaching can be found on the baseball field or by the pool.

 

Janet Rusz has been working with children since 1976. She is currently director/principal at HCA. She has her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and her Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision. from VCU. She has taught grades pre-K through 5th grades.Mrs. Rusz continues to teach as much as she can by tutoring children and teaching Sunday School at her church, Cool Spring Baptist. She has been at HCA since it opened in 2007. She has 3 grown children. Her favorite hobby is reading on the beach.
